With just three simple ingredients - scrumptious squirrel meat, sweet potato and tantalising turmeric. Thanks to their mostly nut based diet, squirrel meat contains more protein ounce for ounce than beef or chicken. In addition, squirrel is also a good source of iron, niacin, and vitamin B6⁽¹⁾. The grey squirrel is a non-native species, it was introduced into the UK in the 1800s. Grey squirrels compete more successfully than red squirrels for food and habitat. They are larger and more robust, and can digest seeds with high tannin content, such as acorns, more efficiently. This forces red squirrels into other areas where they can find it more difficult to survive. They also carry a virus that kills Red Squirrels. Without management, red squirrels could become extinct in England.
